SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION/ Información de Beca
The Whale Shark and Oceanic Research Center and its Board of Directors are proud to offer scholarship opportunities for Honduran nationals enrolled in Honduran universities who are seeking advanced careers in marine conservation. The Jim Engel Ocean Steward Scholarship (JEOS Scholarship) is awarded to only 2 students each year (1 student for the spring season, 1 for the fall season), and is intended to promote marine education outside of the classroom. Recipients are entitled to an educational internship placement at the Whale Shark and Oceanic Research Center on Utila for up to 6 consecutive months, which will include all necessary SCUBA diving courses up to the Divemaster (professional) level. This educational experience – and the associated training – is valued at $10,000*. This opportunity represents the only scholarship option within WSORC.
Dates and deadlines:
We are now accepting applications for our Spring 2024 JEOS Scholarship placement, commencing on the 1st of April 2024 and terminating on 28th of September 2024. While the duration of the scholarship may be flexible within that time, we recommend that applicants consider the full 6-month experience (especially if they do not currently hold any diving certifications). A minimum commitment of 4 months is required.
Application materials must be submitted in full by 23:59 (CST) on February 23rd, 2024. Finalists will be notified of an interview process in the following days, and the Spring 2024 JEOS Scholarship Recipient will be announced by March 1st, 2024.
Eligibility:
To be eligible for WSORC’s JEOS Scholarship, you must be currently enrolled in a Honduran University or graduated less than 2 years ago, and be at least 20 years of age by the start date of your placement. We also require that all applicants:
-Have a strong interest and substantial background in marine science and/or biology
-Are able to communicate well in English (both spoken and written) to at least a conversational level
-Are willing to integrate with intern groups from all over the world throughout the placement
-Have the ability to work at least 900-1700, at least 6 days per week, sometimes in hot and humid outdoor conditions
-Confidence in and around water is essential

Because our operations are all currently conducted in an English-speaking environment, we ask that all application materials be submitted in English, without exception.

ONLY COMPLETE APPLICATION PACKETS WILL BE REVIEWED. Email applications to info@wsorc.org with subject “JEOS Scholarship Application” by February 23rd, 2024 deadline.
*Scholarships will cover the recipient’s accommodation for the full duration of the placement, and training costs of SCUBA courses up to Divemaster certification level (Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver and Divemaster). The scholarship does NOT cover:
-Personal food and drinks during the placement (and any other items the recipient will choose to purchase)
-The application fee of $150 to be paid to PADI upon conpletition of the Divemaster course.
- Scuba diving insurance. We recommend DAN and should cost around $150
-Power top-offs at the accommodation as needed.
INFORMACIÓN DE BECA
El Centro de Investigación Oceánica y del Tiburón Ballena (WSORC por sus siglas en inglés) y su Junta Directiva se enorgullecen de ofrecer oportunidades de becas para ciudadanos hondureños inscritos en universidades hondureñas que buscan avanzar sus carreras en conservación marina. La Beca Jim Engel Ocean Steward (Beca JEOS) se otorga a solo 2 estudiantes cada año (1 temporada de primavera, 1 temporada de invierno) y está destinada a promover la educación marina fuera del aula. Los beneficiarios tienen derecho a una pasantía educativa en la organización WSORC en Utila por hasta 6 meses consecutivos, que incluirán todos los cursos de buceo necesarios hasta el nivel Divemaster (profesional). Esta experiencia educativa, y la capacitación asociada, se valora en $ 10,000 USD *. Esta oportunidad representa la única opción de beca dentro de WSORC.

Ahora estamos aceptando solicitudes para nuestra colocación de la Beca JEOS para el primavera de 2024, comenzando el 01 de Avril 2024 y finalizando el 28 de Septiembre de 2024. Si bien la duración de la beca puede ser flexible dentro de ese tiempo, recomendamos que los solicitantes consideren la experiencia completa de 6 meses.
Los materiales de la solicitud deben enviarse en su totalidad antes de las 23:59 (CST) del 23 de Febrero del 2024. Se notificará a los finalistas sobre un proceso de entrevista en las próximas semanas, y las solicitudes para el Beneficiario de la beca JEOS de primavera de 2024 comenzarán en el 01 de Avril 2024.

Eligibilidad:
Para ser elegible para la Beca JEOS de WSORC, debe estar actualmente inscrito en una universidad hondureña o graduado hace menos de 2 años y tener al menos 20 años de edad antes de la fecha de inicio. También requerimos que todos los solicitantes:

Tengan un fuerte interés y una amplia experiencia en ciencias marinas y / o biología

Sean capaz de comunicarse bien en inglés (tanto hablado como escrito) al menos a un nivel de conversación

Están dispuestos a integrarse con grupos de voluntarios de todo el mundo a lo largo de la colocación

Tener la capacidad de trabajar al menos 9:00 – 17:00 , al menos 6 días por semana, a veces en condiciones húmedas y calurosas.

La confianza en y alrededor del agua es esencial.
Requerimientos de aplicación:
Debido a que todas nuestras operaciones actualmente se realizan en un entorno de habla inglés, pedimos que todos los materiales de la solicitud se envíen en inglés, sin excepción.

* La beca cubrirá el alojamiento del beneficiario durante la duración completa de la pasantía y los costos de capacitación de los cursos de SCUBA hasta el nivel de certificación Divemaster (Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver y Divemaster). La beca NO cubre:
-Comidas y bebidas personales durante la colocación (y cualquier otro artículo que el destinatario elija comprar)
-La tarifa de solicitud de $150 se pagará a PADI al finalizar el curso Divemaster.
- Seguro de buceo. Recomendamos DAN y debería costar alrededor de $150.
-Electricidad en el alojamiento según sea necesario.
