When To Come

Utila is one of the world's nine predictable locations for finding these elusive creatures on a consistent basis. This makes Utila a premier location for whale shark research and encounters. They can be spotted off Utila at any time of year. Weather, lunar cycles and water temperatures influence our sightings.

We know that they are always here. The male whale shark does not appear to migrate as far as the female, who can travel up to 1,400 miles. Therefore we often see more male and juvenile whale sharks (sex undetermined).

We, of course, can not guarantee that you will have a whale shark encounter while visiting Utila. However your chances of sighting and swimming with them are greatly enhanced as compared to elsewhere in the world. Our boats, crew and scientist are experts in locating and finding these beautiful critters.

If you are planning to come to Utila primarily to see whales sharks please contact us, so we can help plan your trip.
